A guide to help new Nightlines grow, built from the field

The Starter Kit is a comprehensive, practical resource designed to support students, organizations, and institutions who want to create their own Nightline service. Over the past two years, volunteers from different countries have worked together, sharing their experiences and combining their knowledge to create a tool that is both accessible and grounded in reality. It reflects a collective effort driven by a shared commitment to improving student mental health.

A guide that carries on the tradition of students supporting one another, helping to launch Nightlines across Europe

Since 1970, when the first Nightline was created in Essex, more than 70 Nightlines have been established around the world, mainly in Europe, all driven by the same student-led commitment to supporting mental health. Many Nightlines have been created over the years, sometimes driven by local initiative, and sometimes inspired by a Nightline volunteer from another country on Erasmus, often without any guide to follow.

The peer-to-peer model empowers students to take action both individually and collectively, fostering solidarity, mutual support, and resilience. However, launching a Nightline can feel overwhelming. This is precisely why the Starter Kit was developed: to guide you through each key step, from building a team to launching a service, while sharing lessons learned from existing Nightlines.

The goal is simple: to make it easier for new initiatives to emerge and to strengthen youth-led, “by and for students” services across Europe.

Set-up your Nightline with Nightline Europe

With the release of the Starter Kit, Nightline Europe hopes to inspire the development of new initiatives across the continent. Students can play an active role in supporting mental health by leading initiatives, co-designing services, and building peer networks alongside professionals.

If you’re in the process of setting up a Nightline, Nightline Europe can support you with:

  • Access to Resources: get guidance, shared tools, and practical advice to help launch and strengthen your local Nightline.
  • Community Connection: connect with a network of established Nightlines ready to accompany you through every step of your journey.
  • Access the network: join a Europe-wide movement for student mental health.

Starting a Nightline is a big step, but with this guide and the support of a European community, you’re never alone.
